In addition to donating old T-Shirts and using them as cleaning rags, you can upcycle them into plenty of new things including jewelry, accessories and even grocery bags. For those who have a significant number of T-Shirts sitting unworn in a dresser, turning them into a home accent might be the perfect project.
Cintia Gonzalez-Pell of the craft blog My Poppet prefers using secondhand materials in her projects, and she managed to turn a collection of old shirts into an attention-grabbing braided rug.
"I love making projects that involve at least one of the following criteria; decluttering, upcycling, sewing and a need," Gonzalez-Pell writes on her blog, and for her, this project accomplished all four of those things.
Gonzalez-Pell used 13 T-shirts to make her rug, but you can use as many or as few as you like, depending on how big you'd like your rug to be. Aside from the shirts, you'll need only a few other supplies including a sewing machine and scissors.
The first step in assembling the rug is to turn the fabric into yarn, which is a pretty straightforward process that Gonzalez-Pell explains in her tutorial. After that, you'll braid the yarn and then sew the braids together using a sewing machine.
Gonzalez-Pell breaks the process down into easy-to-follow steps. When you're done, you'll have a durable, one-of-a-kind rug.
