Glenn Beck is known for many things, but apparently recycling for the good of the earth will never be one of them. The outspoken politically conservative talk show host recently banished such items as biodegradable spoons and recyclable cardboard boxes from his broadcasting and production company, Mercury Radio Arts.
“If you want to [recycle] because you love trees, I understand. You don’t want to kill all the trees? I get it. But if anyone does anything in this company because of global warming, you’re fired,” he said on his show.
“I would like a memo to go out this week that global warming is a pile of crap,” he added. “A load of socialist, communist crap.”
Also coming under fire during the same show were fluorescent light bulbs. Presumably, Beck was targeting compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs, the lower-energy-consuming bulbs introduced in 2007 to replace conventional incandescent bulbs. CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy and have six times the life-span of conventional incandescents.
“I’ll fire the person that … starts to purchase fluorescent light bulbs,” he said.
The good news for Beck’s staff is that they can save energy and their jobs by buying LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs, which have largely replaced CFLs in popularity because they are more efficient, versatile and have an even longer life-span.
However, most LED bulbs are packaged in recyclable boxes, so let’s hope staffers will remember to remove them from their packaging before bringing them into the office.
